Inflected Basilica

The brief requires an interior design of an education hub as an accompaniment for the gallery for the coming Sydney Biennale 2016.

The proposal is a fiction based on the narrative that it was an ancient basilica which took form of a prototype as ideas for the architecture of Cockatoo Island.

Cockatoo Island at the current condition is analogous to the quote "The future is already here it's just not evenly distributed" by Gibson. The media appetite for consumption has shifted the view of reality by giving attention toward surface.

The proposal seeks to restore the reality that exists beyond the surface. It examines the reality architecturally, that exists within the real based on Complexity and Contradiction by Robert Venturi and Theatre of the Absurd

Residual Space-Foyer

Convex residual space outside the main meeting area. It is enclosed by floating colonnades analogous to the side aisle. The enclosure defines the space while allow views into the meeting area. Movement from the foyer to the meeting space allows people to perceive the space beyond the convex space. The transition to the dominating space beyond adds to the understanding of the residual space before.

Communal Space

The equally dominant counteraxis (northwest-southeast axis of building 124) is created through the extension of the axis of building 123. It is created through the defamiliarization of a basilica layout with concave central aisle; a spatial pause that gives a sense of openess to encourage communal activities and meeting. The flat apse located at the end of the axis is used for screening and performances. The reformation of the basilica layout reconciles culture and life through killing the respect for that which is written.

Workshops

3.42X3.42m grid partition of segmental arch opening is adjustable in height and width to suite spaces required for workshops. The partitions also serve as panels for artwork display. The point grid suggests bars of asylum/prison. It is the diagram of order in the disorder of reality.

Residual Space

The residual space outside the grid partition is filled with steel frame ceiling. Swings are installed at this space for individual contemplation and group discussion. It is open to elaborate space and manipulate light.
